İzmir for medical travellers: the calm alternative
2026-05-28 · 4 min de lecture · Équipe Dr. Akşan
Turkey’s third-largest city combines full-service hospitals with an easygoing Aegean pace — often a better fit for surgery and recovery than a megacity.
When people think of treatment in Turkey, they usually think of İstanbul first. İzmir — a city of over four million on the Aegean coast — is often the more comfortable choice for surgery and recovery.
A city built on a human scale
İzmir offers the infrastructure of a major city without the intensity of a megacity. Distances are shorter, traffic is lighter, and the seafront promenade (the Kordon) gives recovering patients somewhere pleasant to walk — which matters more than it sounds after spine surgery, where early, gentle walking is part of recovery.
Full-service hospitals
Surgeries for our patients take place at Özel Gazi Hastanesi and Acıbadem Kent Hastanesi, both full-service hospitals in İzmir with intensive care units and modern surgical infrastructure.
Getting there
Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB) has direct flights from many European cities, and frequent connections through İstanbul from everywhere else. The airport is roughly half an hour from the city centre.
Climate
The Aegean climate is mild for most of the year. Spring and autumn are especially comfortable for a treatment stay; summers are hot but dry.
The practical picture
For a planned spine or brain operation, what matters is the hospital, the surgeon and the follow-up — not the size of the city. İzmir delivers those without the logistical friction of a larger metropolis.
