The suitcase for a surgery trip looks different from a holiday bag. A short, realistic packing list from the patient’s perspective.
Packing for surgery abroad is mostly about comfort during recovery. Here is a realistic list.
Documents
- Passport (check validity) and any required visa/e-Visa confirmation
- Your imaging (DICOM files) and medical records, even if already sent digitally
- Medication list and travel insurance policy
- Printed hotel and hospital addresses — useful for taxi drivers and forms
Clothing
- Loose, front-opening clothes that don't require lifting your arms or bending — button shirts beat pullovers after spine surgery
- Slip-on shoes with good grip; bending to tie laces is exactly what you'll want to avoid
- A light layer for air-conditioned hospital rooms, whatever the season
Recovery comfort
- Your regular medications in original packaging, enough for the stay plus a buffer
- Phone, charger and a power bank — your phone is your translator, boarding pass and connection to family
- A small pillow for the flight home; many spine patients find it helps
What to leave at home
Heavy luggage. You should not be lifting anything substantial after surgery, and hotels and airports can only help so much. One medium suitcase with wheels beats two heavy bags.
The one-line rule
Pack as if someone else will occasionally carry your bag and you will spend several days preferring not to bend — because both are true.
